Get Ready for the Holidays: What to do with the Gifts you Didn’t Love?

Well, we’ve gotten through Hanukkah, Thanksgiving and Christmas together! New Years is just around the corner, and we will have officially gotten through the holidays.   I hope you were able to use some of my tips and advice along the way, and it helped make your holiday season less stressful and more enjoyable!  I’ve got a few posts left for the holiday series… the ones that make the most sense for AFTER Christmas, not before.

Today’s post:  What to do with the gifts that you just didn’t love at Christmas.

unwanted gifts

First things first.  It’s okay not to love everything you received, especially if you’re embracing the “it’s the thought that counts” mentality of gift giving.  Whether or not you got what you REALLY wanted, or if things you got make you scratch your head and say, “why would she have gotten me this?” or “what the heck am I going to do with THIS now?” it’s always important to keep in mind that people usually *want* to be good gift givers and make you feel well-thought-of when you open that present, but not everyone nails it.

So, you’ve got some stuff. Maybe you have things that just don’t fit, or not your style. Perhaps you received duplicates of something. Or there’s a gift card for some place you actually can’t imagine shopping in at all. Or a video game for the wrong game system.

Some of you will say, “I just can’t get rid of it. It will offend the gift giver. I just have to stash this away and hope s/he never asks about it.”  You’ve taken it on as your own problem, and while I personally don’t love that answer, I get it that it happens. The guilt can be overwhelming.  Just remember this:  When the person bought you this gift, his/her intention was not to make you feel badly!  The gift giver wanted you to be happy and like your gift.  If you didn’t, then NEITHER of you are happy.  Nobody wins.

Hopefully, you’ve been able to separate from the guilt, and are able to move forward with a plan of “what to do with this”.  Here are a few options to keep in mind:

RETURN IT:

  • Best case scenario, you have something you need to return AND a gift receipt (or a good enough relationship with the gift giver that you don’t feel uncomfortable asking for the receipt).  Just because you have a receipt doesn’t mean that all stores will take it back whenever.  Some stores have a short time frame for their return policy  (such as 30 days from purchase, or 15 days after Christmas, etc) so, research the stores policy and make the return trip a priority in your schedule.

  • Worst case:  you don’t have the receipt, and can’t get one. Many stores will work with you with a “Store Credit” gift card.  Do yourself a favor and visit the store as early as you can when they open (before the returns desk have been bombarded with people all day) and bring a really friendly and cheery attitude with you.

SELL IT:

  • Of course, there are items that aren’t great for YOU, but will have value to lots of other people. You can try to list items on craigslist, ebay, Amazon, your local Facebook online yard sale site, etc. There will be lots of people willing to spend some money after the holidays to get something they really wanted. You may not make top dollar on the item, but you will get an unwanted item out of your home, and some cash in your pocket.

  • Clothing, especially for current season, might do well if you go directly to a consignment shop. Some stores only take items during a certain window, so you may have to hold on to off-season items until they’re ready for them. You may also want to try an online consignment shop like threadUP, which accepts children’s and women’s clothing.  They send you a package, you mail off your clothing, they send you payment that can either be used to shop at their online consignment shop, or paid to you via paypal.    My friend over at Stapler Confessions blogged about using it recently…  check out her post on it here.

  • New phone or tablet for Christmas? Sell the old one on Gazelle, which quotes you a cash value for your older items and an easy process to send in your item.

  • Gift Cards:  You can SELL them!  Use a service like Card Pool  or Gift Card Granny to help turn your unwanted gift cards into cash… or into other WANTED gift cards.

TRADE IT:

  • Trade-ins can be formal or informal.  Amazon is a great example of a formal trade-in program.  You can take many items (books, music, video games, electronics, etc.) and look up the item on the  Amazon Trade-In shop, and identify the “Trade In” price. Some items will obviously be more valuable than others, so evaluate what you think you can get for a trade in vs. selling in some other method.  But, again, for duplicates of items, or “grandma thought I had an Xbox but I really have a PS3” items, it’s a nice way to get some value out of it, EVEN if it wasn’t bought from Amazon.

  • A great informal approach is to do a swap party with some friends.  Get some friends you trust (and make sure you go through your gifts to make sure none are from that circle!) and host a January party, but send out the email letting them know now.  Something like, “Going through your gifts and finding some you don’t really want to make a home for in your house?  Let’s get together and see if we can swap some treasure. Bring new clothing, household goods, etc. and let’s see if we can give some of these items a more loved home out there!”

DONATE IT:

  • Donation of new items is always going to have value, and being able to share items that just don’t work for you will almost certainly work for others in need.

  • Freecycle or Craigslist Free items listing are great ways to let go of items quickly, if you’re not set on donating to a charity and you don’t even have to leave your house to do it. Again, your discards may be someone else’s treasure.

  • And, don’t forget… you probably got some great stuff that lets you REPLACE some older things… (one sweater in, one sweater out?) Start building your first donation pile of 2014 right now!

Get Ready for the Holidays: Getting Your Home Ready for Guests

We’re coming into the home stretch, with Christmas about a week away. If you’re like me, you’ve got some company coming in at some point in time over the holiday week, and *maybe* your guest room has been taken over by other projects… present wrapping, present storing, decorations that just haven’t made it to the tree or mantle yet.  I’ve got a short period of time to get my house overnight-guest-ready, and I’m going to share my checklist and tips with you!

overnight guests

If you have guests coming into town to stay for one or many nights, spend time preparing thoughtfully for their stay. This includes where they are sleeping, the bathroom they will use, and any living/common space they’ll be spending time in during their visit.

MAKE THE GUEST ROOM AWESOME:

Think about the things you might want to have on hand for your guests to feel comfortable and NOT have to ask you for them:

  • Pull together a welcome basket in the guest room: Shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, floss, extra toothbrush, travel deodorant, aspirin, razor, contact lens solution and case, feminine products, pain relievers, throat lozenges, Q-tips  (Maybe hit your favorite dollar store for a few comforts!)

  • A basket or dish for them to give their wallet and keys a home

  • Extra blanket

  • Tissues

  • Magazines

  • Night light

  • Alarm clock

  • A bottle of water

  • Is the room hot and dry at night? How about adding a small humidifier?

  • Space in the closet to hang a few things, and some hangers

  • An obvious place to put a suitcase, out-of-the-way if unpacking into a dresser, or easily accessible if living out of the suitcase for the stay

  • Turn off the ringer on a phone in the guest room, so they’re not bothered by your calls.

  • If there’s a TV in the bedroom, leave out a channel listing, and a set of directions on how to use the remote.

  • Extra points: Spend one night in it and give it a test run to see what you’ve missed!

MAKE THE BATHROOM GUEST-WORTHY:

  • Lay out fresh towels, including wash cloths.

  • Make space for their toiletry kit to have a home for their stay.

  • Provide a cup to store toothbrush and toothpaste.

  • Have a hairdryer accessible.

  • My biggest quick-cheat when I have overnight guests coming: I replace the shower curtain liner!  Mine always seems to be dingy and needing cleaning, and for about $2 I can buy a new one and throw it on and my shower will look WAY cleaner when company uses it!

MAKE THEM COMFORTABLE IN THE LIVING ROOM OR KITCHEN:

  • Make sure there are plenty of blankets for wrapping up on the couch in the evenings or the mornings.

  • Have a variety of beverages, cold and hot, available.  Put out a small “coffee station” so that they can feel comfortable to make some coffee or tea without asking. Coffee mugs, coffee, tea, cocoa, sugar, splenda, and milk or cream in the fridge.

  • Place tissues in each room.

  • Provide charging area, where they can charge their devices during their stay.

  • Space in the fridge for people to use, for medication and what-not, is very considerate.

  • Have a decent selection of breakfast options available.

  • Put out some easily accessible snacks and fruit.

  • If you have a no-shoes-in-the-house rule, provide a place for the shoes to go, a seat to make it easier to put on and remove shoes, and, extra points for providing guest slippers!

GET YOUR HOUSE IN ORDER… FAST:

Even if you’re just having a few people over one night, you’ll probably want to get the house clean… and in a jiffy if you need to.  If you only have an hour or less to clean, throw on a holiday radio station, grab a few supplies (dust cloth, swiffers, multipurpose spray or wipes) and hit the top areas that your guests will see:

  • Gather kids toys and things that don’t belong in rooms quickly with a laundry basket and take them out of common spaces.

  • Dust the obvious things: TV and electronics are the worst offenders.

  • Wipe down window sills, base boards if you have the time (I use a Swiffer sheet or a dryer sheet for those).

  • Straighten out the pillows on the couches.

  • Vacuum the floors.

  • Empty the sink of dishes, and put away the dry ones.

  • Take out (or shove down) the trash.

  • Clear off the kitchen counter to the best of your ability.

  • Clean the toilet, the sink and faucet, and put out fresh towels (and make sure there’s plenty of toilet paper).

  • Buy or cut a bouquet of fresh flowers… ALWAYS makes us seem like we put more effort into everything!

Get Ready for the Holidays: Last-Minute Gifts

I’m rounding up Gift Idea week with one that speaks to a very special type of gift giver: The Last Minute Shopper.

gift idea week block

Let’s assume that it’s last minute. I mean REALLY last minute. All that is open to you is a drug store, a grocery store, a convenience store and the internet.  What can you possibly do?

First stop: The Internet.

1) With a few keystrokes and a credit card, you can buy an instant virtual gift card, which can either be emailed to the recipient or printed out on a printer.

Use a site like gfitzip.com or a Virtual Visa through  http://www.giftcards.com/virtual-gift-cards

Many stores offer eGift certificates in an instant, including some of these:

  • Amazon

  • Target

  • Walmart

  • Gap

  • Old Navy

  • Victoria’s Secret

  • Macy’s

  • Kohl’s

  • CVS

  • Staples

2) Other items you can purchase online for instant delivery:

  • An “of the month” subscription

  • Amazon Prime – a year’s subscription for free shipping on Amazon

  • Magazine subscriptions

  • Kindle downloads

  • iTunes downloads

Next Stop:  Drug Store, Gas Station, or Grocery Store.  If you can find one of these kinds of places open (and you could certainly be lucky enough to do so), there are always some decent enough items you can purchase that you can pass off as a gift, even on the way to wherever you’re going.

1)   Grocery Store:

  • Really nice bag of coffee, or really high-end chocolate bar (high percentage of cocoa)

  • Christmas stocking full of favorite candy bars

  • Selection of “gourmet” sauces or ingredients

  • Beer or wine.

2) Drug store or convenience store:

  • Gift cards

  • Candles

  • Earbuds

  • Gloves/mittens

  • Make up/perfume

  • Picture frame (and a favorite photo you can print out at home… )

  • Electric razor

  • As Seen On TV products

  • Manicure kit

  • Stationery, cards, stamps

  • Lottery tickets

  • Suggestion from Reader Rebecca Stapler: “Something that’s really popular with younger kids are the Dream Lites, Flashlight Friends, and Pillow Pets. They will also have coloring books, markers, crayons, etc.”

Good luck, and don’t forget to wrap your gift!

Get Ready for the Holidays: Clutter-Free Gift Ideas (part one)

People mean well and buy us gifts that we don’t always love, can’t use, feel badly about returning, etc. Or, maybe we try hard to buy our spouses and kids things, so that they have things to open on Christmas morning,  but they end up destined for the donation pile.

Get Ready for the Holidays: Gifts for Getting Organized at Home

If you’re reading Clever Girl Organizing, there’s a chance you enjoy what your life is like when it is organized, or you get inspiration from reading my posts or seeing before and afters. Is there someone on your gift list this year who would love to be more organized? Or maybe you’re just looking for some ideas for your own list for Santa?

Here are my top gift ideas for Getting Organized!

1. Label Maker. There are a lot of options out there for label makers today, from simple to sophisticated.  “Sophisticated” includes the ability to print icons for different images, different fonts. Some good brands to check out are Brother and Epson.

2. Shirt Folder.   I’ve talked about this one before, when I shared the t-shirt fold-and-file method to keeping t-shirt collections and dresser drawers organized.

3. Scanners. A scanner can help get to a paper-free system.  Scan copies of receipts, bills, paperwork from school or medical appointments, etc. There are a few options for scanners that can help you get in order, such as  Neat Desk, Neat Receipts, or Scan Snap from Fujitsu.

4. Freedom Filer system.  This is a filing system for your important documents that helps you keep what you have in order, and remove items when you no longer need to keep them. You can customize your filing system for what you need.

5.  Planner.  So many options for paper planners to choose from!  I think planners can be a personal style, especially the “build your own” type, so perhaps consider a gift certificate to one of these popular spots for a planner:

6. Family Command Center Planner.

  • DIY your own. Use a common surface, like a white board, glass picture frame or cork board, and DIY a gift for someone.

  • Monthly Dry Erase Calendar, like these from Delightful Order‘s easy.com shop.

  • Post-it Planner

7. Slim hangers.  Velvet-covered slim hangers can really make the most out of limited closet space. Treat someone to a total hanger makeover!

8. Clear pockets (Martha Stewart Avery).  I get these from Staples, and use them for lots of things.  They’re great inside cabinet doors, for holding things like coupons, take out menus, recipes, mail to review, gift certificates/gift cards. They’re translucent, so you can always spot what is in them. They come in white or blue, three sizes: medium,  vertical or large sizes.

9. Slide Out Drawers.  One of the best ways to get more out of the cabinets you have today is to install pullouts. Whether wooden or metal, installing them can be done by you, or you can hire a company like ShelfGenie to redesign a whole kitchen!  Lots of good choices out there for the DIY approach to shelves you can pull out, making every inch of your cabinets more reachable.

10. Cross-cut shredder.  Help get a handle on all the paper that comes into the house AND protect your identity as you let go of paper you don’t need to keep.  Fellowes makes a top-rated one, and you can find them in a wide range of prices, trading off capacity for price. (The more you want to shred at once, the more you’ll pay for it.)

Get Ready for the Holidays: Gifts for the Organized Traveler

It’s GIFT IDEA WEEK here at Clever Girl Organizing!  Every day this week, I’ll bring you a list of some of my favorite gift ideas, from the perspective of being organized!

gift idea week block

Today’s list: Top Ten Ideas for Staying Organized While Traveling!   Know someone who travels a lot?  Here are some great ideas to make the trips easier and more organized:

1.  Grid-It – This is a flat board that has woven elastic straps on the top, allowing you to securely attach items of different sizes and shapes.  Commonly used for electronics (devices, cords, chargers, etc.) or for other small items. Comes in multiple sizes, to fit your needs.

2. Packing Cubes or Folders. These are items that allow you to pack items more compactly, and better use the space inside a suitcase. Some good ones out there, like the ones from Eagle Creek.

3. Travel Chargers.  Many people travel with multiple devices these days. Having one charger that can handle multiple devices is a great space saver for an individual or family with multiple devices. Something like this Anker device can handle different kind of devices with different wattage requirements… keeping the whole gang charged and happy!

4. Aero-Tray.  If I flew more often, I’d totally have this on my wish list this year.  Aer0-Tray is a new product, available on TravelSmith, which allows you to still use your airplane tray while also using your laptop computer.

5. Bag Bungee.  Make walking with more than one bag easier by making double duty of your roller bag handle.

6. Lay-n-Go.  A drawstring pouch that opens up flat, and closes back up easily. No more digging through what you packed to find small items. Lay-n-Go came to market first with a great solution for LEGO and other small-item play time, and recently released the cosmetic bag.

7. Pill Planner. Organize any medication you have to take, keeping track of either daily, or multiple-times-per-day.   I like this one for multiple doses per day:

8. Document Holder.  Keeping travel documents, passport, money, credit cards, in a secure pouch can be a big help to organized and safe travel. Many pouches today will offer RFID security, helping to protect from identity theft, as well.

9. Luggage Scale. The cost of overweight luggage can add up!  Know what you’ve got before getting into trouble with a luggage scale.

10. The Wingman.  The Henty Wingman, out of Australia, is a unique bag which allows for the rolling of a pressed suit and a shirt without wrinkling, and can hold other things, as well.  It’s the priciest item on the list, but for the frequent traveler who requires a suit or jacket, this may be a game changer for brief-but-organized travel.
